Installing CentOS Linux 01

This gude will show on how to install Linux. We will be using CenOS Linux for this guide. You may download the current server CD in CentOS Linux website. As for this guide the version screen shoot is not that current but relevant.

In this tutorial we will install only centos as a basic standalone server. We advice that you will use a separate hard disk for this installation to prevent lost of data. Let us begin.

Step 1.

Obtain the CentOS Server CD ISO. Compare the md5sum of the ISO you have downloaded against the md5sum published by the download site then burn the ISO into a CD. Make sure to set your motherboard's BIOS so that it will boot the CD ROM drive then the Hard disk. Insert the CD that contains the installer into the CD ROM drive during power on of the system.

Step 2.

The user is given a choice on whether to install or update the operations system. Select install if you want a fresh installation of the current OS version and select update if you have an existing old version of the Operating system. For our tutorial we will do a fresh install to our system.

Step 3.

We are given choices on how to install CentOS linux. We can press the enter key of our keyboard to start the installation in GUI or Graphical User's Interface or type linux text to start the installation in text mode. Type linux text as our installation choice. The advantage of installing linux in text mode is, for example your video card is not yet supported or if there is a problem with the video card then the installation can still continue.

Step 5.

We now have a choice to test the integrity of our OS copy. If the md5sum of the ISO is the same with the md5sum published by the download site is the same prior to burning to CD, then we can skip the media test.
